The story behind WHY I do what I do
When I woke up this morning, I listened to a Ted Talk about starting with WHY. The name of the talk is “How great leaders inspire action,” a classic from Simon Sinek.
In this talk, Simon explains why some people and companies are inspirational leaders and why others are not. And it all starts with WHY.
Sinek explains, “People buy from other people because of their “WHY” and not because of their “WHAT”.
In other terms, people don’t buy WHAT you do or HOW you do it, they buy WHY you do it.
There is so much noise out there when it comes to different products, services, businesses, and entrepreneurs that it’s hard to stand out in the crowd.
That’s why I believe we need to give people something to believe in. Something that inspires them to take action.
I’ve been trying to pinpoint my WHY for a while, so I wrote it down on paper (I initially wrote this in my journal) to see what sticks out to me.
When I first started my web design business, I was merely doing the WHAT. (See example photo from my first business Facebook post below). I was offering web design services to local customers through word of mouth referrals.
I enjoyed building websites, sharing my ideas, and expressing my creativity. And web design was a way for me to do that.
As I continued building out my business, I realized the possibilities when it came to making good money in the industry. I believe that was one of the main reasons that propelled me to continue moving forward.
(I know today that money is absolutely NOT a good reason to be in business)
But WHY did I want money at that time? I think there are a few things that initially stuck out to me and what money could get me. For example:
The ability to travel around the world
To have a flexible schedule
To build a nice, future home with my fiancé Haley and future family
To be financially free
To be able to retire early
To support my life’s goals and dreams
As I continued to legitimize Zipperer Creative LLC, I put together a brief 5-year plan for my business to help me works towards another dream I have: building a camp retreat in the mountains.
This idea was inspired by a trip that Haley and I took to King’s Canyon National Park in California. We camped inside the park at a campground called Hume Lake. This camp was nestled on a lake in the mountains and was the most surreal place I’ve ever visited.
Little did we know this campground was connected to a Christian camp right on the other side of the lake. We spent our days walking over to the camp and I was SO inspired by what they have built. They had everything from cabins, lodges, pools, basketball courts, a football field, a cafeteria, a coffee shop, a snack shop, water sports, hiking trails, and more. The camp offered retreats for families, couples, businesses, father and sons, and schools. It was a place where people from all over the world could come and escape from the daily hustle and bustle of life.
Ever since visiting that camp, I was inspired to create my own place in the mountains. The name I am initially calling this camp is M.A.D.T. Camps (Make A Difference Today Camps). Right now I have my mind set on Colorado. I’ve never been there as an adult, but I can’t tell you how many times Colorado has come up in conversations, overhearing other people talk, driving down the road, etc.. It’s been a gut feeling for me.
So to get back to my point of WHY. I knew if I wanted to build something like M.A.D.T. Camps, I would need money and I would also need a following. The best way I know how to potentially make the kind of money to start this camp is to build an online business that offers courses, training, and services that helps other people grow their brands online.
I know this route isn’t a get rich quick scheme. It will take time and hard work to get where I want to be. But that’s WHY I’m doing what I’m doing right now. So that in five years I will be able to start and fulfill my dream that I am being called to most in my life.
In short, why do I do the work I do right now? I guess I kind of knew the answer all along, but it helps for me to write things down to get clarity:
I’m doing it to help me reach my life’s biggest dream
I’m doing it to make a difference and positive impact in the world
I’m doing it as part of a bigger goal I have in life that I’m working toward
I’m doing it to provide a promising future for my family
I believe the same can be said for other people who are running a business, thinking about getting started, or are in a 9-5 job. Some people may absolutely love what they do in their jobs, but I believe most are working for other reasons. For example:
To provide for their families
To build a dream home on the beach
To take a trip of a lifetime vacation
To start their own business or side gig
To start their own movement or cause
And that’s what I BELIEVE a website and building an online brand can give you. It’s WHY I’m running the business I’m running today. Not only to help with my life’s biggest dreams but to help YOU reach your life’s biggest goals. To help make your dreams comes TRUE. To help FULFILL your purpose in life.
I know what I’m working towards right now won’t be easy, but I know the potential rewards can be tremendous. I’m not there yet, but I’m well on my way.
I hope that you can believe in this yourself, too and find your WHY, so that we can continue to make this world a better place.
